Hawken , the free-to-play mech-based shooter from Adhesive Games, is still in open beta. It’s been in open beta since December and, while Adhesive Games’ Jason Hughes says the developer hopes to launch the game “sometime this year,” and a new update coming “later this month” promises to radically alter the current state of the game. Pilots will now have their own progression system with a spate of unlocks attached. Last Eco, a new forest map that contrasts the usual industrial and urban warzones of Hawken , will drop in this upcoming update, as will a host of new tweaks for the current line-up of mechs. This new version of Hawken will retire the current Optimization system, replacing it with a new Tuning system – a more nuanced set of variables attached to each subclass of mech. Before, the Optimization tree had three categories covering offense, defense and movement that players could tinker around with, but now it’s been broken down into more common sets of modifications. For example, every mech has the ability to change its armor in the new Tuning system, but not all mechs have the ability to change their hydraulics, which govern movement parameters. Each mech has six open item slots, so players can equip as many items as they want within those slots.

Planetside 2 , Tribes: Ascend , Mechwarrior Online , War Thunder , Hearthstone — no matter how grindy or grasping their economies turned out to be, what these games all had in common was an engaging core experience. This is the key to PC free-to-play: you have to make that core gameplay element — the one that exists outside of the level treadmill and continual trickle-trickle of soft and hard currency that forms the cornerstone of any F2P economy — fun for everyone who plays it, not just those who have paid money.
If people are having fun, and spending a lot of time in your game as a consequence, then spending money on it will seem like the most natural thing in the world. Each of the above games with the possible exception of Tribes: Ascend grasped this concept, and grasped it well. Hawken is a free-to-play FPS where you pilot various models of giant robot suit and try to shoot other giant robot suits right in the face.
Anyone play Hawken recently or know if the matchmaker in the game is fixed? Back when Nathan played it (I played it at the same time), the.
Developer Adhesive Games first announced Hawken in early with a work-in-progress trailer. It looked too good to be true: a gorgeous, gritty first-person multiplayer mech shooter more visceral than MechWarrior and more approachable than Steel Battalion. It released in and built a solid following. Reviewers pegged it exactly as it looked: beautiful, fast, fun, casual. It was to mech games as Burnout was to the racing genre: exciting, arcadey and aggressive.
Hawken is kind of a mess. The game makes a pretty lackluster first impression with a main menu in desperate need of a modern refresh and no real introduction of any kind. That can be a nice touch in context of a greater story campaign, but removed from that, it feels a little inelegant and time-consuming. By the time I got into a proper match, I still felt mostly unprepared, but impatient to start playing.

Compounding this dullness is Hawken’s matchmaker, which seems utterly incapable of producing anything resembling fair and balanced.
Battling other players in giant robot suits in a video game is incredibly thrilling. But imagine what it would be like if you could take the controls in an actual mech cockpit. With the Oculus Rift, you get a step closer to the real thing, and if you were one of the lucky few to get your hands on the immersive 3D goggles, you can see Hawken’s full potential with the game’s next update coming in the next few weeks.
The developers have spruced up the interior geometry of the mechs to support the 3D capabilities of the Oculus Rift. Control panels jutt out making you feel like you can reach out and touch them. When you turn your head you can see the top, bottom, sides, and even the back of the cockpit. The 3D effects make the world feel almost real and even made us a little dizzy after boosting off a rooftop.

Online matchmaking services like Fiverr, and a host of start-ups like G-pprentice, are trying to monetize this newfound line of work by connecting.
Anyone play Hawken recently or know if the matchmaker in the game is fixed? Would be nice if they had fixed it by now? I suggest using the server browser and watching for excessive team swapping. If you see anything remotely suspicious, pick another server. The level of the player has very little effect on match outcomes. Yes, you do get some edge over a complete beginner but the real issue right now are high skill stacks.
That is simply not true. Higher level players have enough cash to unlock the more expensive mechs which, apart from simply having more health than other mechs of the same class, also have access to weapons which, again, simply do more damage. Not to mention that the game bizarrely has a talent tree.
